A passport is essential to have an unforgettable experience abroad. Learn how to get your passport in just five steps.
Step 1: Fill out the application
The application form can be completed online or downloaded as a PDF. However, you should not sign it until the passport acceptance facility is instructed. In most cases, this will be your local post office.
Step 2: Gather all the documents you need
To prove your citizenship, you will need to show proof. A birth certificate is the most common form of identification. Ensure that your birth certificate meets all requirements. You must also provide proof of citizenship.
You will also need photocopies of the U.S. citizenship proof and each ID you have, front and back, if printed information is available.
Step 3: Get a passport picture.
Go ahead and put on your best face to get your photo taken. Don’t attempt to take your passport photo because of the strict requirements. Many chain pharmacies have photo departments, copy shops, FedEx/UPS locations, and many other places.
Step 4: Pay the fees
An application fee to the U.S. Department of State and an execution fee to the facility receiving your application will be required. For a first-time application, this will cost you between $135 to $165. However, fees can vary depending on your age and shipping method.
Step 5: Submit your application in-person
Once you confirm that you have all the required information and checked with the U.S. Department of State, you are ready to submit your application. The first-time applicant must submit their application in person at an authorized facility.
InterExchange does not represent any government. Before applying, you should ensure that you read the U.S. Department of State requirements. You will find a useful passport wizard and a list of frequently asked questions.
